SERENDIPITY

A HOME ON THE REACH AT OLD HARBOR
IN VINALHAVEN, MAINE

This beautiful home is owned by an artistic decorator. The home has lovely antiques, comfy furniture, folk art and lots of cool stuff. It is at the same time luxurious and casual, exciting and serene. It has white slip covers you can feel comfortable putting your feet on.

It is the excitement of its sometimes extreme weather during the winter that enhances the feeling of serenity you’ll feel while sipping a glass of wine, snuggled in front of the fireplace. It is a home where upon walking in, you feel taken care of.

The open floor plan with beamed ceiling, central fireplace and three sets of French doors is both cozy and spacious offering expansive views over Hurricane Sound and the White Islands.
The dazzling sunsets over the western bay are indescribable in their beauty, sometimes fiery in color, other times subtly diffused through a late afternoon fog.

The view continuously changes as the tide ebbs and flows,
exposing or covering the rocks at the tip of Burying Island as well as through the seasons as the sun swings across the horizon from summer to winter.

During the summer, there is a colorful garden of buoys in the water out front as the lobstermen set their traps close to shore, and through the winter, you’ll occasionally see a lobsterman-turned-scalloper dragging for scallops.

There are seals, sea ducks, mergansers, loons and eagles to keep the nature lovers thrilled. There is always something to watch and it is continually changing. Be sure to bring your camera and paints to capture and take home with you the beauty before you.

For those of you who enjoy cooking, the kitchen, with its classic black and white checkerboard floor, is very well equipped with beautiful stainless pots and pans, utensils, appliances (food processor, coffee grinder, mini blender for summer smoothies, microwave and gas stove). There is even a generous supply of spices and most of the necessary ingredients like flour, sugar, oatmeal, vinegars and oils available for your use. Eat by candlelight in the dining room or out on the deck and watch the glorious colors of the sunset while listening to your favorite CD. The half bath on the first floor will make you feel like royalty sitting on the throne (for those of you who can throw modesty to the wind and leave the door open) the view is spectacular!

There are two bedrooms upstairs: the master bedroom has a king size bed, the smaller room has a queen.

The large bathroom upstairs with its claw foot tub and pedestal sink looks out over the water. There is also a stall shower.

Off the bathroom, there is a large laundry room/guest room with washer and dryer. There is a full size futon with a very comfortable, upgraded mattress. The room has been cheerfully decorated with a room dividing curtain, disguising the fact that it is a laundry room. All the beds have comfortable mattresses with the addition of Thera-foam and overstuffed mattress pads.

A favorite among previous guests is the outdoor shower under the deck. There isn’t much in this world that is more sensual than a cool breeze blowing while standing under a hot shower.

Off the dining room, there is a room called “The Museum” where the owner’s art supplies, projects and collections are displayed. Since the owner is no longer a full time resident, the room has been modified from a studio with the addition of a twin and full size bed and dresser.

Then just a few steps through the mudroom/workshop is a back stairway that leads down to a bonus room. This room on the ground floor with its 8 foot radial head window that looks out over the water has a full size futon (also with a very comfortable, upgraded mattress.) It is a very private, almost secret little nest. There is a toilet in this room, somewhat private, but to call it a half bath would be an exaggeration.

The landscaping is taking shape, but to plant a tree in Vinalhaven means digging up enough rocks to build a stone wall! A lawn is another difficult undertaking because of all the exposed ledge and boulders, it makes mowing a challenge. And then there is the limited amount of soil in which to plant. In other words, the gardening is an ongoing process, with some of the property still rather “natural.”

The house sleeps 10. There are two TVs, one with DVD/VCR, the other just DVD; both have satellite hook-up and there is a CD stereo system. Pets are allowed for an additional charge.
